I know most people paint the outside of the hives (rightly so) for protection, but is it a good idea to paint or seal the inside of the hive?  My thought is using a water sealer or clear varnish just to seal the wood.  What I don't know is, will this hurt the bees.  I know you'd need to let it dry and cure to get all the odors/fumes out.  Anyone got thoughts on that.  Thanks in advanced for all input.

Good question -- I used to paint my hives inside and out before I knew better.
But the fact is, painting or sealing the insides of hive bodies, while it should not hurt the bees, is completely unnecessary. They will coat the entire surface with a thin coat of propolis regardless of what you do. This is also done in hollow trees, and both protects and disinfects their living quarters.
The only "inside" surface I paint is the bottom board, as water may sit on that if your hive is not tipped forward.

I have found that if you are using syraform(BEEMAX), if you paint only one side, the painted side peals off easier.
